Built for these decisions.
If any of these are your question, this is the tool.
What can I cook tonight that actually uses the za'atar I bought in January?
โ Three dinners ranked by aging-bottle usage. Shakshuka with the za'atar, roast chicken with the sumac, lentil soup that finishes the cumin.
Do I already have smoked paprika? Cardamom?
โ Two-tap inventory check before you leave the house. The aisle photo mode shows you the bottle and the open date.
Which spices have I not touched in 18 months?
โ Sorted list with open date, last recipe used, and a one-tap 'donate or finish this week' decision.
I want to try Indian cooking. What am I missing, and what do I already have?
โ Cuisine starter check: 12 baseline Indian spices, you already own 7, here are the 5 to buy. No more guessing in the aisle.
Eighteen bottles, most opened once. The recipe always asks for the one you forgot you had.
Home cooks open one bottle of sumac or za'atar for a single recipe, then forget it for two years. The bottle sits behind the cumin. Next time the urge hits, you buy a new bottle because you cannot remember if you have it. Repeat across cinnamon, cardamom, paprika, smoked paprika, fennel seed. The spice rack turns into a graveyard of 18 bottles used once each, $80 of waste, and every week a recipe asks for one ingredient you swear you bought last year. The fix the internet recommends is buying a matching tin set or rebuilding the drawer. None of that solves the real loop: you do not know what you own, you do not know how old it is, and nothing tells you what to cook with the bottle that is two months from going stale.
Four pieces, one tool.
Each piece ships in the first build for waitlist members. SaaS upgrades layer on top.
Three-photo scan builds the full inventory
Photo OCR reads the label name, brand, size, and lot date if printed. You confirm each row in a quick swipe pass. Most cabinets fit in three photos. No barcode required for the initial scan, no per-bottle typing.

Tonight panel ranks recipes by aging bottles
The 6pm screen shows three dinners. Each one is sorted by how many of your oldest bottles it uses. You see the recipe, the aging ingredient highlighted, and a one-tap mark-as-cooked that updates the use date.

Aisle mode for duplicate guard
At the store, scan a bottle's barcode or photograph the label. The app answers in under two seconds: you own it, you own two, or you do not own it. A bright color call, not a paragraph to read.
Stale-by-month watchlist
Open dates feed a flavor-loss curve. Ground spices flag at nine months, whole spices at eighteen. The watchlist surfaces the next three bottles to use, plus one recipe for each that fits the pantry you have today.
Today's tools don't do this.
Eighty dollars a year in duplicate jars on average. One spoiled batch of bread or curry from stale cinnamon every two months. Weekly recipe abandonment when the call for one spice triggers a grocery trip. The harder cost is decision fatigue at 6pm, the daily 'what do I cook' that ends in takeout.
Three-photo rack scan, photo OCR with brand and label parse, tonight recipe panel, aisle duplicate guard, stale-by-month watchlist. iOS only at launch.
Android, voice add for hands at the stove, family share so two adults stop buying the same bottle, cuisine starter packs, Penzeys / Burlap and Barrel restock deep link, Apple Shortcut.
Full meal planning across the rest of the kitchen, calorie or macro tracking, grocery delivery integration. For full meal plan, pair this with Cooklist or Pestle.

Solo builder ยท Choppy Toast
This page is a quick vibe-coded probe to test demand and gather feature requests. The actual product, when it ships, will be a polished, hand-built tool, not this scaffold.
For a sense of what "polished and shipped" looks like, here's another product I built: relly.permissionlabs.com.
Honest answers.
Then I wait. The waitlist stays live forever, no expiry, no archive. The faster you bring a friend who has a spice graveyard, the faster I build it. That is the whole engine.
